Turn The Page

Diane Bixby had to get out amongst the living again ...

It was two years since Cache’s accident. I had to quit grieving and move on with my life. Besides, it wasn’t fair to our son, Connor.
The Manhattan Mall had a bookstore, and I learned a famous author was promoting his latest release at a signing. Connor and I loved books, and this would be a great opportunity for us to do something different together.
I knew nothing about the author, but fortunately for me, one of his biggest fans was the line with me. He was eager to tell me all about them.
Evan Matthews finally had his chance ...
My favorite author of all time was promoting the last book in his thriller series. I was able to get the day off, so I could finally meet him. I had so many questions to ask the celebrity.
I passed the time in line chatting with an attractive young mother and her son. We hadn’t noticed the stacks of books diminishing, and both reached for the last copy.
Suddenly we were no longer in the store but chasing a car after watching someone snatch a child off the street and toss him inside.

Follow Diane and Evan as they chase a killer through the streets of New York, but only after they, Turn The Page…

Benny jumped up and spun around to face me. With the scalpel in his left hand, he glanced at Diane, and then back at me. “I’m afraid you’re cheating. I don’t like liars or cheaters.” He reached into his front right pocket and pulled out a pair of handcuffs.
He tossed them onto the desk, “Now, you’re going to take a time out. Put those on.”
Maybe if I taunted him enough, he’d go after me and leave Diane alone. It was worth a try until I could get close enough to free her. “Why are you doing this, you sick freak?”
“When you’re good at something, why change? In case you haven’t noticed, I have the knife.” To make his point, he jabbed the scalpel down into the top of Diane’s thigh and yanked it back out. “Shall we try this again?”

The crisp morning air was exhilarating and cooled her heated skin. Without her music blaring in her ears, she heard birds, and a helicopter whirred above the top of one of the pricier hotels that lined the streets on the west side of the park. Occasionally she heard a car horn, probably from one of New York’s infamous yellow cabs.
But now, as she sprinted underneath a footbridge, all noises were muted, except for the sound of heavy breathing coming from behind her. As soon as she left the darkness, Sunny stopped on the path, and spun around, as that same, “Asshole,” raced past her.
“I’ve been worried for nothing.” She put her hands on her thighs and gulped in the air to calm her racing heart. Then she laughed, “I guess he showed you, little girl.”
Perhaps now was as good a time as any to turn around and start back the way she’d come. Sunny had a good scare and a good workout for the day. Plus, she still had shopping to do, which meant a return to the hotel first to grab something quick to eat, shower, and look for her money.

He led him into the batter’s cage and pushed him up against the post planted into the ground at home base. Benny controlled Nick with a stun gun. Nick was a fighter at first. Now, he had burns on his face, arms, and chest from being zapped so many times.

Benny spoke as he wrapped the heavier polypropylene tying twine around his victim. “I’m sorry, kid. When I was younger, I always thought I wanted a little brother. But what I needed was someone to play baseball with me.” He tied the ends of the rope behind Nick’s back and then tugged on the line to make sure it would hold.

“That’ll work nicely, even on a big boy like you. This might hurt a little. I’ve set it for fastball.” Benny left Nick inside the cage and shut and locked the gate. “Safety first, you know.”  He pushed the button to activate the balls, before opening the cooler next to his lounge chair and taking out a can of beer.

He sat back in the chair and raised the beer toward Nick, “Play ball.”
